We Need Your Help!

Has anyone noticed all the pine cones this year?  We raked our property and one week later the yard was covered with Ponderosa Pine cones.  We picked them up again and decided to use the pine cones as a fire starter for our outdoor fireplace.  I was very surprised how well they burn and I suppose it’s because of all the pitch which got me thinking about the added fire danger this year with all the extra pine cones laying around.  Pine needles, pine cones and low hanging branches are called ladder fuels which help a fire climb trees and crown out.  A crowning fire is almost unstoppable,  so this is where we need your help.  It’s time to clean up all the needles and cones and make our neighborhood a safer place to live.  We need to pay special attention to pine needles on our roof because falling embers will catch those needles on fire in a hurry especially if the north wind is blowing.  The fire department has been in the neighborhood and you will probable get a note in the mail if your lot needs attention.  It is very unsettling to know that I can clean my lot but if my neighbor doesn’t clean off his roof my home will probably catch on fire from radiant heat if his house goes up in flames.  We will be discussing the possibility of becoming a FireWise community at the General Meeting so please come and learn what we all can do to protect our investments in the Pines.

If the job seems overwhelming this year we have the solution.  Mark Burnham has become a permanent resident in the pines, bought a ten yard dump trailer and has started a yard cleanup business.  I have waited to post his information until I got a review of his work and the results are in.  One member has used his services and was the lowest of three bids and did a remarkable job removing every needle on the property.  His contact info is below:
